His eminence Archbishop of Askalon, Nicephoros (in the world Nicholaos Baltadgis) was born in Xanthi in 1944. Arriving in Jerusalem in 1961, he was admitted to the Patriarchal School and the following year he was tonsured Monk. In 1964 he was anointed Priest and later assumed the Abbacy of the Holy Monastery of the Archangels and the supervision of the Holy Monastery of Saint George of the Hospital.
In 1966 he was nominated member of the Estate Council while the following year he assumed the Abbacy of Haifa, he was elevated to Archimandrite and later in 1969 to Abbot of Lydda.
In 1970 he went to America for studies in Philosophy and Religion where in 1981 he graduated from the corresponding Department of the Florida International University, USA, and assumed the Abbacy of the Holy Monastery of Saint Nicholas in Jerusalem, as well as the duties of Secretary of the English Department of the Chief Secretariat.
In 1983 he was nominated Dragouman and after two years Elder Sacristan of the Most Holy Church of the Resurrection and Member of the Holy and Sacred Synod. Serving from 1986 also as member of the School Board he was elected on February 12, 1988, Bishop of the Most Holy Bishopric of Constantina, with the anointing being performed by His Beatitude Patriarch Diodoros on February 29, in the Holy Edicule of the Most Holy Sepulchre.
In the month of April of the same year he assumed the duties of Patriarchal Commissioner to Irbet. By decision of the Holy and Sacred Synod (28-04-2006) the Bishop Nicephoros was elevated to Archbishop of Askalon.
