Early Capernaum was founded west of Galilee. She carries the name “Kfar-Tehoum” which means “border village”. During the Byzantine era (4th-6th century), Capernaum was recognized as one of the most important of the Christian shrine centres because she was closely connected to events in the New Testament. Many of the Apostles came from Capernaum. Also, it was there where for the first time the mystery of the Divine Eucharist was taught and in her environs the Lord shouted out His famous “On the Mount Sermon”. In the environs of the magnificent city He performed most of His miracles, such as the miracle of the demoniac, of the paralytic, of the mother-in-law of Apostle Peter and of the servant of the Roman Centurion.
