In the morning of the great Thursday after the Divine Liturgy of Basil the Great, at the Cathedral Church of Saint James the brother of God, in the Great Courtyard of the Most Holy Church of the Resurrection, the ceremony of the holy wash basin is performed, led by His Beatitude, the Patriarch of Jerusalem who according to the ceremonial of the Church of Jerusalem, washes the feet of twelve Archimandrites in commemoration of the event when the Lord girded with an apron during the Last Supper, washed the feet of His twelve disciples, thus making Himself to them and to all of us an example of humility. Around the stands in the middle of the holy courtyard, gather all the faithful to follow the ceremony of the Holy Wash. During the holy ceremony, gospel extracts are read, relating to the Last Supper of the Lord and the washing of His disciples feet.
