The Most Holy Metropolitan of Skythopolis, James (Jacob) (in the world George) Kapenekas, was born in 1921 in Mytilini of Samos. He came to Jerusalem in 1939.

He studied the Sacred Science at the Theological School of the University of Athens. He was tonsured Monk and anointed Deacon in 1943. In 1954 he was anointed Priest and received the Office of Archimandrite.
He served as Librarian, Teacher, Principal and during the period 1954 -1970 as Director of the Journal “New Sion”. In 1970 he was appointed Patriarchal Commissioner to Akri.

In 1972 he was elected Archbishop of Diocaesaria. He accompanied the Patriarch Benedict at his trip to America and represented the Patriarchate at the Inter-Orthodox Conference in Addis Ababa.

In 1983 he was nominated Director of the Journal “New Sion which he directed until 1992. In 1991 he was named Metropolitan. In 2003 he was elevated to Metropolitan of Skythopolis.

He visited the Church of Cyprus and the Patriarchate of Moscow as member of the delegation of the Patriarchate.
