This mountain which is the tallest in the surrounding regions of Jerusalem, 730m from sea level, consists of a mountain range with three peaks. The southern peak of the Ascension of Christ, where all the Christian shrines of the Mount of Olives are concentrated. On the northern peak, Mont Scopus, on which is built the Jewish University of Jerusalem. The middle peak with the Hospital Augusta Victoria, dedicated to the wife of the German emperor Wilhelm 2nd. In Jewish it is called Har-Hazeitim, meaning Mount of Olives or simply E-tour.

From the 4th century, the Mount of Olives attracted many Christian pilgrims and monks and on it were built many bethels, churches and monasteries. One Christian foot journey of the 6th century numbered 24 churches and shrines on the mountain, the most important of which were:

1.   The shrine of Christ’s Ascension
2.   The Apostolate, where relics of the Apostles of Christ were saved.
3.   The martyrdom of Saint Innocentius with relics of Saint John the Forerunner.
4.   The cell and Tomb of Saint Pelagia.
5.   The Monastery of Abraham
6.   The Monastery of Flavia
7.   The Monastery of the Forerunner
8.   The Monastery of Harbikia and Eufrasius
9.   The Church of Saint Mark
10. The Church of Olives, one of the basilicas built by Saint Helen in the Holy Land.
11. The cave of the preaching of the Apostles
12. The meeting place of Christ with the Apostles after the Resurrection.
13. The Armenian Monastery of Saint Panteleimon
14. The monastery of Saint Mary, which the emperor Justinian restored
