At the Holy Lands there are seventy Orthodox monasteries, including convents, of which sixty one are Greek and belong to the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, eight are Russian and one Romanian. The Greek monasteries are spread out throughout the Holy Lands, on holy places and ruins, while thirty are built in the city of Jerusalem. The number of Orthodox monasteries is incomparably smaller than during the byzantine period, 4th-7th century. The Lavra of Saint Savva which traces back to the byzantine period is only one of the desert monasteries that has managed to survive intact to this day. The monasteries of Abba Theodosius, of Saint George the Hozevite, of Saint John the Forerunner and of Saint Gerasimus were restored and were manned only just the previous century. From the rest of the monasteries, some are ruins and other have yet to be excavated.
